Feed the amounts listed below TWICE DAILY.

In any calf raising program, it is important that calves receive first milk colostrum during the first 24 hours of life (first feeding within 1 hour following birth). Begin feeding milk replacer on the second day of life.

For a 100 pound calf, sprinkle 10 ounces* of milk replacer into a bucket of warm water (110°F) and bring to a total volume of 2 quarts. Each quart of milk replacer will contain 250 mg of Oxytetracycline and 250 mg of Neomycin Sulfate.

Calving at Two

Mon Dec 12, 2011 10:37 AM CST: http://www.dtnprogressivefarmer.com/dtnag/home

By Boyd Kidwell
Contributing Editor

Heifers are at the heart of Alan Graybeal’s cow-calf operation. And breeding replacement heifers to calve as 2-year-olds is key to the commercial cattleman’s profits.

Every year, Graybeal develops 40 to 60 heifers as replacements on his farm, near Radford, Va. The goal is to get these heifers bred at 12 to 13 months of age and to calve at 2 years. He breeds some heifers as early as 10 months of age to calve at 19 months.

Calving this early is an unusual management technique, but it works in Graybeal’s case. Here, the cow herd is divided into spring- and fall-calving groups. Heifers bred to calve at 19 months become replacements in the fall-calving herd. Heifers bred at 10 months have a 75% pregnancy rate, while those bred at 12 to 13 months have a 92% pregnancy rate. Graybeal notes the younger set of heifers doesn’t have increased calving difficulties.

Graybeal’s emphasis on early calvers has research behind it, proving the profits are there. A 15-year study out of Oklahoma shows when a heifer calves as a 2-year-old, it means an additional 300 pounds of beef is produced over that cow’s lifetime, compared to calving first as a 3-year-old. Those extra pounds add up for Graybeal’s herd of 350 SimAngus cows.

Laying the Foundation

The groundwork for developing these early calvers begins long before heifers are even weaned. Graybeal uses artificial insemination (AI) and selects sires for balanced traits and moderate frames. He chooses bulls with Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) for moderate growth and milking ability in their daughters. His goal is moderate-framed heifers that give adequate milk and rebreed with nutrition coming from pastures and hay.

“We avoid extremes in AI sires. If we select EPDs for extremely high growth rates, those heifers may be too large-framed to make it in our grass-based operation. If we select for extremely high milking ability, we may not have the nutrition needed for heavy milk production and on-time rebreeding.”

As Graybeal looks over 160 heifers trying to choose 60 replacements, he leans heavily on the performance records of cows already in his herd.

“We keep many of our heifers from cow families we know have done a good job over the years,” he says.

Graybeal also gives preference during the selection process to the AI-sired heifers, saying these replacements speed up genetic progress of the herd.

Developing on Forage

At weaning time, replacements enter a 45-day preconditioning program along with those calves destined for the feedlot. After this phase, replacement heifers go on pasture, depending solely on forage and high-quality alfalfa hay.

As breeding season approaches, Virginia Tech veterinarian Dee Whittier performs reproductive tract exams on the heifers. Each one receives a reproductive tract score measuring physiological readiness. A score of 1 indicates the heifer has an infantile reproductive tract and isn’t ready for breeding. A score of 5 indicates the heifer is cycling. Heifers with a score of 4 are cycling or probably will be in a few weeks. To conceive early in the breeding season, 12-month-old heifers should have scores of 3 to 5.

Heifers in the Feedlot

While Graybeal relies on forages and hay to prepare replacement heifers, in other regions, feedlots are key in developing replacements. Because of short grazing seasons, Wes Dvorak, of Manning, N.D., develops heifers in his feedlot. He starts at weaning, sorting large-framed heifers from his 250-cow herd. They are finished in feedlots with steers. He evaluates the remaining heifers, keeping 40 for his herd and developing the rest to sell as bred heifers.

“In selecting replacement heifers, I look closely at the performance of the dams and the bloodlines of the sires. Then we cull based on conformation and temperament,” says the North Dakota cattleman.

Dvorak uses a high-roughage ration and shoots for moderate weight gains that allow a heifer to reach a target weight of 60 to 65% of mature weight by breeding season. Ultrasound is used on the heifers after AI to see which are bred and to sex expected calves. Marketing heifers as groups that will have either all bull or all heifer calves is a good sales tool in today’s replacement market.

Advice From a Pro

Patsy Houghton, of McCook, Neb., founded a custom heifer-development facility called Heartland Cattle Company 21 years ago. After managing 80,000 replacement heifers for rancher/clients, the PhD in ruminant nutrition is nationally known as the guru of heifer development.

Here are Houghton’s tips for selecting replacement heifers:

– Match weight with appropriate frame. Depending on feed resources, heifers should mature into cows weighing 1,100 to 1,300 pounds. A heifer that matures at 1,150 pounds should have a high 4 frame score.

– Boost fertility with medium-framed heifers. Taller, larger-framed heifers have a longer growth curve and tend to reach puberty later.

– Take advantage of hybrid vigor. A planned crossbreeding program pays dividends in fertility, growth and longevity.

– Establish a uniform cow herd. Houghton prefers black- or red-bodied heifers. White faces are fine, and pigment around the eyes reduces the chances of pinkeye.

– Select calm heifers. Cattle with quiet dispositions exhibit better fertility, immune response, weight gain and meat quality.

– Vaccinate heifer calves for brucellosis prior to 10 months of age. Heifers vaccinated after 10 months run a risk of showing positive titers for brucellosis as young cows.

– Schedule reproductive soundness exams 35 to 45 days prior to breeding. Houghton finds approximately 5% of otherwise good-looking heifers flunk reproductive soundness exams and should be sent to feedlots.

– Feed to meet target weight and Body Condition Score (BCS). A heifer should reach a target weight of 60 to 65% of her mature weight at the time of first breeding. For heifers that will weigh 1,300 pounds as adult cows, the target weight is 780 to 845 pounds with a BCS of 5.75 to 6.00.

– “Develop your heifers on a high-roughage, limit-fed ration. Heifers developed on a high-roughage diet have a better chance of breeding back under ranch conditions,” Houghton advises.

Deere System Syncs Harvest Equipment

Thu Aug 25, 2011 02:30 PM CDT. http://www.dtnprogressivefarmer.com/dtnag/home

INDIANAPOLIS (DTN) — It’s been four years since John Deere introduced a new line of combines. So dealers at Big Green’s annual meeting here this week were buzzing about the new S-Series combines for a lot of reasons, including a Machine Sync product that allows a combine and tractor/grain cart to coordinate positions wirelessly.

Increasing the dealer buzz was the fact that the new offerings include Deere’s first Class 9 combine. The S690 cranks out 543 hp and has a 400-bushel grain tank that unloads at up to 3.8 bushels per second. Class 6, 7 and 8 S-Series combines have similar capacities. Those new machines share the new 13.5 liter engine that is Interim Tier 4 compliant—a first for Deere combines. The Class 5 S550 uses a 271-hp Tier 3 engine.

All of the larger body S-Series machines come with a redesigned cleaning system, which increases capacity up to 33%, according to Katie Dierker, division marketing manager for worldwide combines. A new cleaning shoe is a key improvement. A Variable Stream rotor, which has a tapered nose and tail, is optional for high-yield small grains and rice.

Comfort and efficiency features in the S-Series include a larger cab and touch-screen controls. To maintain a “green-on-green” family feel, controls are similar to those in Deere’s R-Series tractors. The grain tank cover can be opened or closed in 30 seconds with the push of a button, saving time and effort for operators who used to crawl up the combine to do the same job manually. A final comfort feature is a refrigerator under the “training” seat — an improvement over a cooler and sloshing ice.

New options let the combine operator adjust how residue flows out the back of the machine. The idea is to customize crop residue to the field and application. Think straw sales; think biomass bales.

To complement the new combines, Deere also introduced new harvesting platforms including the 600 Series corn heads with Deere’s first 16- and 18-row capability. Other models come in 6-, 8- and 12-row versions. The 12-row models can be configured to 20-, 22-, 30-, 36- and 38-inch rows. The 18-row model accepts 20- and 22-inch rows.

A new HydraFlex draper head comes in 35- and 40-foot models. When used at ground level, the blades flex up to 7.5 inches to accommodate variations in the terrain.

Yet it’s Deere’s new Machine Sync system that has a great “cool factor,” according to Mark Brokaw, product instructor at the dealer meeting. It also increases harvest productivity because it enables multiple combines and grain carts to coordinate efforts like a square dance.

On each Sync-enabled vehicle, the operator can see the status of the other vehicles in the system. In fields with multiple tractor/grain carts and multiple combines, the system will enable a tractor/grain cart driver to move toward the combine that needs to empty. A combine driver also can summon a particular grain cart when he needs it.

Once in proximity, the grain cart and combine “lock” in place, with the software using the tractor’s autosteer system to keep proper distance between the machines, for unloading. The tractor and grain cart follow the combine’s lead: If the combine swerves to avoid an obstacle or to follow a contour, so does the grain cart. The combine driver can “nudge” the grain cart forward or backward in relation to the unloading auger to allow uniform filling.

Selling points for Machine Sync include more efficient use of all vehicles, less operator stress and possible fuel savings. It does not employ robotics technology like that which Kinze introduced recently. Machine Sync requires a driver in the tractor that pulls the grain cart.

The S-Series combines, harvest platforms and Machine Sync will be available for the 2012 harvest. Pricing was not available.

This year’s senior winner is Erin Morrison, 17, of Belle Plaine. Senior members are Allison VanDerWal, 16, of Sanborn, Laura Schoneman, 18, of Bingham Lake and Kelly Morrison, 16, of Belle Plaine. The junior winner is Jenna White, 15, of Wadena.

They will educate the public about beef nutrition, food safety and farming practices during the year.

“Beef is always going to be a safe and nutritious product,” said Schoneman. “We’ll strive to tell our story to consumers.”

The CattleWomen organized the contest held Oct. 20 at the state fairgrounds to select team members. The program, formerly called the Minnesota Beef Spokesperson Team, is open to ages 13-19.

“I think they’re all going to be great,” said Minnesota CattleWomen president Penny Zimmerman. “They all seem to be outgoing young women.”

Twelve people applied this year, Zimmerman said. The competition involved a mock media interview, writing a response to an article with a negative beef message and a mock classroom presentation. Judges assessed the contestants’ ability to tell a positive message about beef production.

Colleen Zenk, director of nutrition and consumer information for Minnesota Beef Council, will coordinate the team’s activities.

The group plans to start a Facebook page, work at the Moo Booth during the Minnesota State Fair and attend the Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Association convention in December. They will also speak about beef in their local areas.

Schoneman wanted to be on the team because she realized how little people in her county knew about the beef industry. Educating consumers is important because it can encourage them to buy more beef, said VanDerWal.

The Morrison sisters and White were on the team last year. This is White’s third year participating and her second year as the junior winner.

“I was shocked at how little consumers know,” Erin said of her first year on the team.

All members have first-hand experience with beef production. The Morrisons have a 70-head registered Shorthorn herd and VanDerWal’s family runs a 700-head commercial feedlot. Schoneman’s family has approximately 30 head of red and black Angus stock cows and they background calves while White’s family has about 80 head of South Devons.

They all plan to have agricultural careers. Erin would like to work with feed or chemicals. Kelly is considering a position in ag business. VanDerWal hopes to become a beef scientist and Schoneman wants to work with farmers to help with nutrition or agronomy. White would like to be a graphic designer for an agricultural business.

All the team members receive scholarship prizes. Erin, as senior winner, receives $500 and White, as junior winner, will get $100.

Joe Martin, executive director of Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Association, presented last year’s senior winner, John Weber of St. Paul, with his $500 scholarship at this year’s expo.

Pumpkins need to be harvested soon if killing frosts have not destroyed the crop. Pumpkins should be harvested when the rind is hard. When harvesting, the producer should wear long sleeves, trousers, and gloves to keep from being pricked by the pumpkin vine. The producer should take a pair of pruning shears and snip the vine about 3″ to 4″ above the fruit, forming a handle. By maintaining this handle during storage, the pumpkin will keep longer. Care should also be taken when harvesting to not bruise or cut the pumpkin, since pumpkins have trouble “keeping” anyway. Any blemish will only speed up spoilage problems.

Pumpkins should be stored until needed in a cool, dry place with average temperatures about 50 degrees. Any pumpkins exposed to a heavy frost have been severely damaged by the cold and will not keep well. Harvesting these pumpkins is almost pointless and not usually recommended.
